Spiritual Bypassing is Essential for Your Growth (and not bypassing is too)

One of the most dangerous ideas in modern spirituality is that awakening automatically makes you a mature human being. It doesn't.

Altered states do not equal altered traits. I know this because I was a non-duality spiritual bypasser for years. And now that I know the difference, I will claim that spiritual bypassing - transcendent self-realization is vital to your growth. You just don’t want to stay there and cling to that. You have to develop the skill of both-and. Let me explain.

Someone can have tremendous spiritual clarity in one dimension of themselves—and remain profoundly undeveloped in another.

You can have an authentic experience of nonduality, and still be terrible at relationships.

You can fully realize that there is no separate self, and still have an ego that can't tolerate criticism.

You can experience profound states of universal love and still lie, manipulate, avoid responsibility, misuse power, or fail to recognize the impact you're having on other people.

Because awakening and development are not the same thing. And this is where spiritual bypassing can become particularly dangerous.

The ego discovers spirituality and says: “I've awakened.” “I've transcended the ego.” “I don't identify with fear-based emotions anymore.” “I've gone beyond conventional morality.” “I don't need your approval.”

But sometimes what that actually means is: I am beyond any need to examine myself or be examined by others. And ironically, spirituality has now become the ego's greatest means to stay in control.

Enlightenment doesn’t mean you're a perfect human being.

Someone may know something extraordinary about consciousness and still know very little about trauma. Or relationships. Or attachment. Or sexuality. Or money. Or power. Or their own shadow.

Spiritual insight doesn't magically make somebody competent in every domain of human development.

And intimate relationship will expose this faster than almost anything else.

You can say you're unattached—but how do you behave when your partner disappoints you?

You can talk about unconditional love—but can you hear negative feedback without retaliating?

You can say the self is an illusion—but can you formulate a proper apology?

Can you repair? Can you admit that you were wrong?

Can you care deeply when someone you love tells you that you're hurting them?

That is embodiment.

The point of spiritual practice isn't to escape your humanity forever. It's to transcend so you bring greater consciousness into it.

So don't use awakening to skip the work of becoming a good person.

Grow up your ego. Heal the wounds. Learn relational skills. Tell the truth. Receive feedback. Make repairs.

And keep whatever spiritual realization you've discovered humble enough to continue learning. Because perhaps the real test of awakening isn't how transcendent you can become. It's how deeply that awakening can transform the human being who comes back down the mountain.

Spiritual bypassing - transcending the content of experience to experience yourself as infinite awareness - is critical to gain perspective on the ego and re-contextualize reality with Truth. Learn how to do it. I can teach you. It’s an important tool to have in your enlightenment toolbox.
